Orpheum Theatre

Completed to be ready as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Proscenium Architecture + Interiors’ renovation work on Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre brought improved lighting, acoustics, and seating to the well-loved heritage performance venue. We initially photographed the renovations for Proscenium, and have returned several times both in presenting photography/heritage tours with the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and civic historian John Atkin, as well as photographing particularly notable (but underseen) parts of the space.

If you’ve looked up while relaxing before a performance or at intermission, you’ve seen the iconic ceiling mural. We photographed the mural on its central axis, ultimately producing a 350 megapixel colour-accurate image, suitable both for reproduction as well as for historical and archival interest: the photo revealed rarely-seen details of the artwork. An umbrella featuring the mural (printed on the inside, of course) is available during the rainy season at the VSO Symphony Gift Shop in the theatre’s lobby.
