The most recent addition to the International Terminal at YVR Airport features a new open-air atrium inspired by the water and forests of the Gulf Islands and provides access to an outdoor space. The lighting design features a combination of cove lighting (mimics moving water), an aerial installation of linear fixtures resembling a log jam (an early means of transporting logs in British Columbia), and moving LED-based displays along the upper and lower foot traffic areas that highlight fish, a water feature, and a controlled-access parklet for access to trees and fresh air.
We photographed this over the course of two days, on either side of the relaxing of the COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions for international travel. While having the entire International Terminal to ourselves bordered on spooky, it represented a rare opportunity to have full control over the lighting , be able to work closely with the lighting designers and installers, and get easy access to several areas that would have otherwise been difficult to manage.
