Designed to resemble an opulent 1920’s Shanghai speakeasy, and tucked into the back of an unassuming Chinatown dumpling house, the ‘house light’ at Laowai is provided by at least 50 Phoenix lighting fixtures, hand-blown and built by Karice Lighting. The fixtures hang suspended from thin wire so as to look floating in the air, softly undulating as patrons move about the space.
This was a perfect project to take advantage of the industry-leading dynamic range of our Phase One medium format technical camera equipment. We captured both the ambience of the space and the detail of the lighting using mostly available light and sensitive postprocessing.
